- If you are a student you can get a discount on all JR transit. The discount does not apply to the shinkansen extra charge but will discount the base train fare. To get the discount you can use one of the discount certificate machines on campus. You will need your student ID to use the machine. You only get so many (10?) discount certificates per year so use them wisely.

Trains
- A helpful website for navigation of public transit.
During school holiday periods
JR offers a
seishun jyuu-hachi kippu 青春十八きっぷ This permits five days of unlimited, nationwide travel on local and rapid JR trains for only 11,500 Yen, or 2,300 Yen per day! You can buy these tickets at the coop or from JR.
Nagoya City Subway and Bus System
- From the 1st through the 8th of each month you can buy a Nagoya Pass for 620円 good for all day on subways and busses. The ticket is only valid on the 8th of each month.
- Navigation of Nagoya Subway
- UPDATE: The subway appears to have discontinued the IKOMAI-pass listed below, but you can show your all day subway pass for discounts on admission tickets at places like Nagoya Castle.
- The subway used to? sell the IKOMAI-Pass for 1300円 which is an all day subway pass and includes the entrance fee into many of Nagoya's sites (Nagoya Castle, Zoo, etc.)

Planes and Plane Tickets
- Check out seatguru for help picking good seats for those long flights to and from Japan.
- A new service from Mobissimo searches lots of discount ticket shops and lists the prices for you.

- Bus/taxi service that goes door to door for around 3,000 yen.

International Travel
- Insurance - Please keep in mind that your health insurance will not cover you outside of Japan. You should look into travel insurance to cover you while you are out of the country.
- Immigration - You need to have permission to return Japan if you make an international trip while you are living in Japan. You will need a current re-entry permit. Also do not forget your foreigner registration card and passport when you leave.
- Notify the school - When you travel abroad you need permission from your supervising professor and must notify the school.
