Wordprocessor/Office

A good open source and free substitute for Office is Open office.

Browser

  • Firefox is a good one.
  • If you use firefox rikaichan is a very good plug-in Japanese-English dictionary. Rikaixul also used to be good but does not seem to work in Firefox v. 1.5.

Tips for using firefox

  • highlight any text and right click to automatically look up with google.

Anti-virus

  • Norton Antivirus
Students and faculty can download for free Norton antivirus here. The university has a site license for it and other programs. You have to access the page from the campus network for it to work.

  • Free AVG
An alternative is the free AVG anitvirus program. Download it from here.

Photo/Picture Editor

  • Gimp is a very good open source (free) editor
  • Picassa is a free photo organizer, editor, and sharing program from google.
  • paint.net is a free open source editor similar to the Microsoft paint program but better.

Audio Editor

  • Audacity is a very good open-source (free) audio editor.

Bittorrent Client

  • Azureus is a free open source client.

VOIP (Voice chat)

Keep in touch for free over the computer.

  • Skype free calls over the net pc-pc. Low cost calls PC-phone.
  • Google talk free pc-pc calls. Must have gmail accounts.
  • Festoonic lets you add in video to Skype or Google talk.

Desktop search

Find stuff quickly on your computer with free desktop search programs.
