Cellular phones (Keitai in Japanese)
Cellular phones are very popular with students.
- To get an account you generally have to show your gaijin torokusho (foreigner registration card) and your Nagoya University ID (for student discounts). There are many plans but most of the paperwork is probably in Japanese. You should bring along a Japanese speaker when registering if you can.
- Someone please add in what companies offer good student plans.
- The AU phone shop in Hoshigakoka said that although they do not offer contract forms in English they do have English speakers on staff to help you complete the paperwork.
Home phone service
To get a home phone you need to register with NTT. (Someone please add in how to do this.) Once you have a home phone you can sign up for internet calling services such as Yahoo BB. This is an internet ISP plus phone service.
