Tips on Learning the Law

General

  • Law Underground is a new site with the objective to "provide free access to legal information." I looks like a wiki for legal information. Feel free to drop by and add information about your countries. (Remind anyone of a certain project for International business negotiation class?) ;)

American Law

Many students want to study about American law. The main problem is finding a good place to start. While law reviews can offer very good analysis, they are a poor place to begin because they usually focus on the small or controversial details.

  • American Jurisprudence (Am. Jur.) is similar to an encyclopedia of American law. As such it offers a great place to being your research. You can access Am. Jur. through lexis.
  • American Law Reports (ALR). "Although similar in tone to the articles in legal encyclopedias, ALR annotations are different in that they are not organized alphabetically, and they tend to drill more deeply into a specific legal principle or doctrine while in contrast, encyclopedia articles aim for the big picture. In addition, ALR articles are careful to provide cases on both sides of the legal issue and provide listings of cases according to the jurisdiction." Taken from the wikipedia. You can access ALR through lexis.
  • The Legal Information Institute (LLI). LLI is a very good free source of legal information on American law. If you do not have access to lexis LLI offers a good alternative. LLI covers cases, statutes, and basic information. LLI also has a very good e-mail service that emails you the latest Supreme Court decisions almost as soon as they are announced.
