FAQ

1. Big Files

Q: "How can I transfer files larger than 10MB?"

A: Since email services usually limit the maximum size of an attachment it can be difficult to transfer large files. There are two free services that let you drop off files and have someone else pick them up. The services store the files for a limited time (like 7 days) and for one pickup usually. This makes them useful for transfers only not for storage.

up to 100 MB: http://www3.dropload.com/
up to 1GB: http://www.yousendit.com/

Words of caution:
* Although the sites say they do not share the email addresses you may wish to avoid using your and your friend's primary email account to avoid spam.
* Avoid sending sensitive files since you will be placing them on someone else's server.
* Avoid sending illegal files since placing them on other servers opens you up to liability in other countries.

2. Corrupted text (mojibake)

Q: "I get mail in Japanese but it comes out as unreadable text and I cannot read it (mojibake). How can I fix this problem?"

A: This is a common problem when dealing with multiple languages. There are a few options.

1. If you use Windows, be sure you have East Asian language support installed. Here are a few pages that can help with this step.
* Gman
* declan
* faq
2. Check that you are using the correct encoding in your browser. View--character encoding is a common place. Auto-select Japanese or manually select one of the various Japanese encoding formats (try all of them until you can see the text.)
3. Make an email account with a Japanese site like Yahoo Japan. Then forward the unreadable email to your Japanese mail account.
